KDOT Urges Caution During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is urging all drivers to stay alert and share the road. The national campaign, “Motorcyclists’ Safety is Everyone’s Safety,” highlights the importance of safe driving and riding habits to help prevent crashes and save lives.

Motorcycle-related crashes remain a serious concern. Preliminary Kansas data from 2024 shows 54 fatalities and more than 850 injuries involving motorcycles. Speeding and alcohol use are among the leading causes.

“Motorcyclists continue to be overrepresented in traffic fatalities,” said KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager Gary Herman. “It’s essential that both riders and drivers pay attention to each other. No matter what kind of vehicle you’re operating, the emphasis must be on putting people’s lives and overall roadway safety first.”

To reduce risks, KDOT encourages everyone to:

  • Follow all traffic laws, including speed limits.
  • Avoid alcohol or drug use while driving or riding.
  • Eliminate distractions and stay focused on the road.

Motorcyclists should also wear high-visibility protective gear, a DOT-approved helmet, and ensure they have a valid motorcycle (M) endorsement on their license.
