Keep Rabbits Out of the Garden: K-State Expert Shares Simple, Effective Solutions

Rabbits are frequent visitors to home gardens, especially when spring flowers and vegetables begin to grow. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says several simple methods can help keep them out.

Rabbits are drawn to young plants but typically avoid potatoes, tomatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers, and some peppers. Fencing is often the most effective solution. A fence should be at least two feet tall with one-inch mesh and supported by posts, though it may not suit every garden’s look.

Floating row covers are another option. These lightweight materials let in light, air, and water while shielding plants from pests.

Repellents can also work but need frequent reapplication and may not be safe for edible plants. Live traps allow for relocating rabbits, though they may ignore traps if more appealing food is nearby. Motion-activated sprinklers can help too, especially those covering at least 1,000 square feet.
