Lawmakers Demand Action on Kansas City Mail Delays After Audit Reveals Staffing and Management Issues

Today, Representatives Sharice Davids, Jake LaTurner, Mark Alford, Emanuel Cleaver, and Sam Graves joined together to address mail delivery delays in the Kansas City area. They urged U.S. Postal Service Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to address issues found in a recent audit, which pointed out staffing shortages and poor management as major causes of the delays.

“In recent months, our offices have received a growing number of messages from Kansans and Missourians concerned about missing mail, delayed postal delivery, and extended periods with no delivery service at all,” wrote Davids and her colleagues. “The USPS Office of the Inspector General identified clear deficiencies…and identified numerous other issues related to the safety and security of personnel in this audit.”

The independent USPS Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently audited the Kansas City Postal and Distribution Center due to reports of very slow mail service. The audit found problems like delays in mail delivery, issues with package scanning, and poor conditions at the facility. In response, Representative Davids and her colleagues are urging the USPS to quickly put the OIG’s recommended fixes into action.
