With the potential for Southern Cloud Unified School District 334 to dissolve, five area superintendents will meet on January 22nd in Glasco. Representatives from five surrounding school districts will attend, including, USD 379 Clay County (Clay Center and Wakefield schools), USD 273 Mitchell County (Beloit schools), USD 333 Cloud (Concordia schools), USD 224 Clifton-Clyde, and 239 North Ottawa (Minneapolis schools).
The meeting will discuss the potential distribution of 334 school boundaries if their board votes to close Southern Cloud. USD 379 Superintendent Brett Nelson said that in previous situations, the state made decisions when all entities were not in agreement.
The district, which now encompasses lower grades for Glasco and Miltonvale, closed its middle and high school operations before the start of the 2024-2024 school year. The 2022-2023 year saw 119 enrolled students, down from 150 in 2020. That accounted for just 58 students from kindergarten through 5th grade. Previous changes were also voted to help cut costs, including hosting school Mondays through Thursdays and combining buildings.
At the school board USD 379 meeting on January 13th, Nelson asked for two board members to attend; Tracy Claeys and Dave Jermark volunteered.
The meeting will take place on January 22nd at 1 pm at the Glasco Grade School in Glasco.
