Longtime MLB Scout Roy Clark Passes Away at 68

Roy Clark, a highly respected baseball scout credited with signing Freddie Freeman, Craig Kimbrel, Jason Heyward and Austin Riley, died Friday at age 68 after battling heart issues.

Best known for his years with the Braves (1989-2008, 2015-18), Clark also held roles with the Guardians, Nationals, Dodgers, and Royals. He signed at least one future big leaguer in each of his first 11 seasons with Atlanta, often uncovering talent at tryout camps. His drafts included stars such as Brian McCann, Adam Wainwright and Jeff Francoeur.

Former colleagues, including Royals president J.J. Picollo and vice president Rene Francisco, praised his relentless approach and mentorship. Dayton Moore, now with the Rangers, called him “loved, respected and feared.”

Clark’s later years saw him help build Kansas City’s scouting department. His influence remains visible in multiple championship rosters.
