The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday afternoon in Manhattan, Kansas. Around 3:50 p.m. on Jan. 3, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office asked the KBI to take over the investigation.
Deputies were responding to a report of gunfire damage to a shed and garage when they heard shots nearby. As they approached a residence, they heard more gunshots and identified themselves as law enforcement. A man, identified as a 38-year-old male out of Manhattan, came out of the house armed with a handgun. One deputy fired multiple shots, hitting Lovgren.
Deputies provided life-saving aid before the suspect was taken to a Kansas City hospital, where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition as of Saturday. No officers were injured.
The KBI says the investigation is ongoing and will determine what led up to the shooting. Final findings will be sent to the Pottawatomie County Attorney to decide whether charges are filed.
