Royals infielder Michael Massey will be evaluated in Kansas City after his back flared up again, ending his current rehab assignment. The team announced Saturday that Massey would return from Triple-A Omaha for further medical review.
It’s the latest in a series of setbacks for the 27-year-old, who was first placed on the injured list June 10 with a left ankle sprain. While rehabbing, he suffered a fractured wrist from a hit-by-pitch and also dealt with the flu.
Massey had made progress during the All-Star break and returned to action on July 18. In 11 rehab games, he hit .174 across Double-A and Triple-A. He last played Wednesday.
Back injuries have troubled Massey since college, and he missed time last season with similar issues. After batting .202 over 56 games earlier this year, he aimed to adjust his swing during rehab and hopes to contribute before season’s end.
