Massey’s Rehab Delayed by Wrist Injury and Illness

By Jayson Henderson

Michael Massey’s rehab has hit a setback unrelated to his original ankle injury. The Royals’ infielder, sidelined since early June with a sprained left ankle, suffered a right wrist injury during his fifth rehab game with Triple-A Omaha. He left that game early and missed the following start.

Then, Massey fell ill, further delaying his return. Manager Matt Quatraro confirmed Massey was sent back from the rehab assignment to Kansas City for evaluation. The Royals can pause his rehab clock, which would reset his 20-day rehab limit once he resumes.

Massey started 35 of the Royals’ first 45 games this season but has struggled offensively with a .202 average before the injury. Meanwhile, Jonathan India and others have taken over second base. The team’s performance at that position has been among the league’s weakest.

The Royals hope Massey can recover fully and return soon to help improve the lineup.
