Memorial Health System
May is the perfect time to ask yourself, “Am I sleeping well?” If your answer is no and you find yourself tossing and turning throughout the night, leaving you exhausted throughout the day, you may benefit from a sleep study. You no longer have to wish for a good night’s sleep. Memorial Hospital’s respiratory care team wants to help!
Sleep studies can help diagnose central and obstructive sleep apnea, or other issues that could be messing with your rest, which could ultimately affect the outcome of your whole day. Sleep studies are performed in a safe, monitored environment right here at Memorial Hospital in Abilene, with experienced professionals from Rural Sleep Solutions.
During your sleep study, a sleep technician will be with you during the testing period. A variety of tests will be used to measure brain wave activity, eye movement, muscle movement, heart activity, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and snoring patterns. Doctors trained in sleep medicine evaluate the results of those tests and then determine a course of action to help resolve your sleep issues.
People are waking up (pun intended) to how important sleep really is for their overall health. At Memorial Hospital, the Respiratory Care Department has recently seen a huge uptick in the number of sleep studies scheduled. Sleep studies increased from two days a month to an average of 12 days a month, which equals about 24 patients a month.
Home sleep tests (HST) are an alternate option to the sleep studies performed at the hospital. Essentially, the patient performs their own sleep study by picking up the equipment and hooking it up themselves. HSTs are less intrusive, cost substantially less, and allow you to sleep in your own bed. However, less data is collected in this option because a sleep technician is not present, resulting in a broader diagnosis.
