Middle School Students Invited to Celebrate Sonia Kovalevsky Day at K-State with Math Workshops and Hands-On Activities

Middle school students are invited to Kansas State University’s Manhattan campus for a special Sonia Kovalevsky Day celebration, featuring workshops with math faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students.

The event will include hands-on activities, such as learning geometry through origami in the “Create Any Shape with a Single Slice” workshop and exploring the role of frieze patterns in dance and art in “Frieze Patterns: Symmetry in Motion.”

Hosted by K-State’s math department and the Graduate Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, the free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in Cardwell Hall.

Open to students in grades 6-8, the event includes lunch. Sonia Kovalevsky, a 19th-century mathematician and advocate for women’s rights, is honored through this event, which aims to inspire girls in math, ease their transition to high school math, and encourage interest in STEM fields.

Space is limited. Learn more and register by April 16, and email skday@k-state.edu with any questions about the event.
