Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) located in Westwood Kansas, set new records in 2024, recovering more organs, tissues, and donors than ever before while performing thousands of critical lab tests.
MTN facilitated 1,075 lifesaving organ transplants from 399 organ donors, giving recipients a second chance at life. In addition, 1,447 cornea and tissue donors enhanced countless lives. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, while a tissue donor can benefit 100 people.
MTN’s laboratory performed 40,075 transplant-supporting tests, including blood counts, urinalysis, and chemistry panels. In its second full year, MTN’s Donor Care and Surgical Recovery Unit cared for 131 donor patients, leading to 430 transplants. The organization’s award-winning histocompatibility lab continues to match donors and recipients and monitor post-transplant health.
Nationwide, the United Network for Organ Sharing reported 48,149 transplants in 2024, averaging 132 per day. Nearly 104,000 people await a transplant, including approximately 488 in Kansas. The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) aims to reach 50,000 annual transplants by 2026 through collaboration with key stakeholders.
