U.S. Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas voted to pass the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which now goes to the President to be signed into law. The bill sets funding and policies for the military and ensures servicemembers have the tools and support they need to protect the country.
Moran said he supported the bill after Senate leaders agreed to quickly bring the ROTOR Act to the Senate floor. The ROTOR Act focuses on improving safety rules for military helicopters, especially when they fly near commercial aircraft. Moran raised concerns that parts of the NDAA could weaken helicopter safety standards put in place after a deadly midair crash near Washington, D.C., in January.
The NDAA includes several priorities for Kansas. It authorizes new investments at Fort Riley, including a new air traffic control tower, training facilities, and barracks. It also expands access to medical care for veterans by encouraging greater use of military hospitals. The bill provides a 3.8 percent pay raise for servicemembers and supports efforts to reduce fires on Navy ships during maintenance.
