U.S. Senator Jerry Moran spoke on the Senate floor on May 14 about the importance of continuing the Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole Food for Education programs. He noted both originated in Kansas and have fed billions globally with American-grown food.
“Since its creation, Food for Peace has reached more than 4 billion people in more than 150 countries using American-grown commodities. Another food aid program, the Dole McGovern program, has delivered more than 5.5 billion school meals to children around the globe,” said Sen. Moran.
Sen. Moran criticized delays and inefficiencies at USAID, which currently oversees Food for Peace, and introduced bipartisan legislation to transfer the program to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He said USDA is better suited to manage the program and has the confidence of American farmers. In fiscal year 2023, Food for Peace bought $713 million in U.S.-grown commodities, while McGovern-Dole added another $33 million.
“I’ve seen the differences these programs can make around the world and I support their continuance even if it needs to be in a new form,” said Sen. Moran.
Sen. Moran said these investments support farmers and help fight global hunger.
