Wildfires have spread through several counties in western Kansas, forcing multiple evacuations.
Two fires originating in Oklahoma crossed into the state, leading residents of Englewood and Ashland to evacuate their homes. Another fire in northwest Kansas threatened Herndon, prompting an evacuation there as well.
Thick smoke and blowing dust have reduced visibility across the region, resulting in the closure of several highways.
Officials say wildfires are common in this part of the Plains during this season, as dry conditions and strong winds make fires spread quickly.
The Kansas Forest Service posted its latest update on Facebook at 8 p.m. on February 17, reporting that many fires were contained without the need for state assistance. Aviation and additional Kansas Task Forces will be available to assist the local fire departments. Residents are encouraged to check local media outlets for evacuation notifications, as well as kandrive.gov for road closures.
