Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals across the U.S. are being honored as communities recognize National EMS Week May 18-24, a time to celebrate and thank the individuals who serve on the front lines of medical care. First declared by President Gerald Ford in 1974, EMS Week brings together local communities and emergency medical personnel to highlight their critical, often lifesaving work.
Led by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), the week includes themed days that focus on specific aspects of EMS work:
- Sunday – Health, Wellness, and Resilience Day: Highlights the importance of self-care and wellness for EMS professionals and patients.
- Monday – Education Day: Promotes community education and continued professional learning.
- Tuesday – Safety Day: Focuses on safety practices for responders and the public.
- Wednesday – EMS for Children Day: Emphasizes specialized pediatric care.
- Thursday – Save-A-Life Day and STOP THE BLEED® Day: Encourages CPR and bleeding control education for the public.
- Friday – EMS Recognition Day: Celebrates everyday heroes in EMS.
- Saturday – EMS Remembrance Day: Honors EMS personnel who died in the line of duty.
Organizers encourage communities to participate in local events, thank EMS workers, and raise awareness of the profession’s vital role.
