U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) announced that nearly $4 million in EPA Brownfields Grants have been awarded to support environmental cleanup and redevelopment efforts in Kansas. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin made the announcement alongside EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Janet Stanek, and Mitchell County Economic Development Director Emily Benedick.
“I am grateful to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin for awarding nearly $4 million to the Sunflower State,” Senator Marshall said. “This funding will help us revitalize our communities, create opportunities for growth, and protect Kansans’ health. Thanks to President Donald Trump’s leadership, the EPA is restoring American greatness by ensuring we have the cleanest air, land, and water while being good stewards of American taxpayer dollars.”
The following Kansas recipients will receive funding:
- City of Beloit: $418,620 to clean up the Kansas Industrial School Campus, a former juvenile detention center contaminated with inorganic pollutants. The grant also supports community engagement efforts.
- Flint Hills Regional Council: $1 million to establish a revolving loan fund for cleanup activities, with funding focused on Chase, Geary, Lyon, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, and Wabaunsee counties, especially Herington, Junction City, and Manhattan.
- Kansas Department of Health and Environment: $2 million to conduct 116 environmental assessments, develop cleanup plans, and host community meetings. Target areas include Kansas City’s Oak Grove neighborhood, Eureka, and El Dorado.
- City of Topeka: $500,000 for environmental assessments, site inventory, reuse planning, and community engagement, with priority sites including the former White Lakes Mall and two former schools.
