New Free Online Course Aims to Improve Work Zone Safety for Kansas Drivers

A new online course, Kansas Work Zone Safe, has launched to help drivers, especially teens and new drivers, learn how to navigate work zones safely. The free course covers safe driving habits, relevant laws, and common work zone scenarios.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, there were 1,705 work zone crashes in 2024, averaging 4.6 per day. These incidents caused 508 injuries and eight deaths.

With around 2,500 miles of road construction recently completed or ongoing, highway workers depend on drivers to slow down and stay alert.

The course is available at WorkZoneSafe.com under the Kansas section. Students who complete it will be eligible for a scholarship, with more details to be announced soon.

The new platform begins during National Work Zone Awareness Week, a campaign focused on increasing work zone safety. Go to KDOT’s website, ksdot.gov/travel/traveler-safety/work-zone-safety, or KDOT’s Facebook page, facebook.com/KSDOTHQ.

The Kansas Work Zone Safe course is supported by KDOT, the Kansas Contractors Association and other transportation organizations across the state. For more information, visit WorkZoneSafe.com.
