A new Kansas law will take effect January 1, making significant changes to driver’s license suspensions, revocations, and restrictions. Under SB 500, more Kansans will qualify for restricted licenses, allowing them to drive to work, school, or medical appointments while paying off fines and fees that led to their suspension.
For the first time, some with revoked licenses for driving on a suspended license will regain driving privileges early. The law also lets courts offer restricted licenses immediately instead of automatic suspensions and caps license reinstatement fees at $100.
Advocates like Senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau and activist Peter Ninemire credit KAKE News for spotlighting the issue. The changes aim to help hundreds of thousands of Kansans regain legal driving status, keeping them employed and insured. More insured drivers are expected to reduce insurance costs statewide.
