New Shipping Policy Could Harm Kansas Businesses and Farmers

Representative Sharice Davids recently urged the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to change a new shipping policy that could hurt Kansas businesses, farmers, and national security. The policy would impose huge fees on American shipping companies that use foreign-built ships. Seaboard Corporation, a major company based in Merriam, Kansas, warns that the fees could force its Marine Division out of business.

The policy is intended to boost U.S. shipbuilding but could backfire by reducing shipping options for American exporters, raising costs, and harming supply chains. Davids is asking the USTR to adjust the policy to protect U.S. shipping companies while supporting the growth of American shipbuilding.

Kansas farmers, who export billions of dollars in crops, could also be affected if shipping options decrease or costs rise. Davids is working to ensure policies support Kansas businesses and strengthen the U.S. in global trade.
