A year has passed since three Kansas City NFL fans, Ricky Johnson, 38, David Harrington, 37, and Clayton McGeeney, 36, were found dead outside a Missouri home on January 9, 2024. The case has remained open with no official cause or manner of death released to the public, police and the prosecutor’s office handling the case confirmed to USA TODAY on Tuesday.
The men, lifelong friends, had gathered to watch the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Los Angeles Chargers on January 7, when temperatures dropped to 29 degrees. Two days later, McGeeney’s fiancée discovered their bodies after breaking into the home when she couldn’t reach him. She immediately called 911.
Kansas City police confirmed the case remains an open death investigation. The medical examiner finalized reports but cited Missouri law for keeping them sealed. Platte County District Attorney Eric Zahnd described the case as complex, assuring it remains under active investigation.
Some of the victims’ family members suspect drugs, possibly fentanyl, played a role. Some believe there’s more to the story. The attorney for the homeowner, who has since moved, denies any involvement, speculating the men might have overdosed or succumbed to the cold. The mystery continues, leaving families frustrated and searching for answers.
