As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about adding some vibrant flowers to your décor, and amaryllis is a great choice for Christmas blooms.
Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini recommends planting amaryllis now for holiday blooms. Known for their large, striking flowers, amaryllis bulbs can grow up to 8-10 inches across and often approach the size of a grapefruit. The larger the bulb, the bigger and more expensive the flowers.
To pot amaryllis, choose a container that is about one inch larger in diameter and twice as tall as the bulb, with drainage holes. Place the bulb in the pot with roots hanging down, add potting mix, firm it around the roots, and water thoroughly. Keep the plant in a warm, sunny location, with temperatures in the 70s during the day and 60s at night for optimal blooming.
Once the buds appear, move the plant to a cooler spot, away from direct sunlight, to prolong blooming. Amaryllis can stay in bloom for up to a month. After blooming, remove the flowers to prevent energy from going into seed formation, and place the plant back in the sun.
When winter arrives, bring the plant indoors, withhold water to let the leaves dry, and eventually repot when needed. If planted now, amaryllis can offer plenty of festive blooms this holiday season.
