Police discourage Christmas lights on moving vehicles

The Ghost of Christmas Past may convince some that they need to attach working Christmas lights to their daily driver, but Clay Center Police Chief Bill Robinson says that wouldn’t be a good idea.

“I’m afraid the traffic laws applying to vehicle lighting are pretty strict,” he said.

Section 163 of the Standard Traffic Ordinances for Kansas Cities details allowed additional lighting equipment for vehicles and Christmas lights are not on the list.

“A violation of this ordinance would be subject to a $20 fine and $100 court costs,” Robinson said.

Those stricken with the Christmas spirit can have non-lighted decorations on their vehicle as long as it doesn’t obstruct the vision of the driver, he said.
