Lawrence police announced an update on a fatal incident that took place at City Hall on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as a 28-year-old man from Buffalo, Minnesota, who was traveling through Kansas on a Greyhound bus. Authorities say the man was removed from a KTA service station on I-70 Sunday evening due to erratic behavior and taken to the Lawrence Amtrak station. Police had no further contact with him until Monday.
Shortly before 8 a.m., the man entered City Hall through a locked back door, broke a window on the fourth floor, and moved into office areas. Employees alerted authorities and sought safe locations. An on-duty court security officer confronted the man, who refused instructions and engaged in a physical fight. Police have not released additional details of the altercation while interviews continue. Officers arrived within seconds of shots being fired and helped render aid. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical took over care and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The full investigation report is expected to be sent to the Douglas County District Attorney in 2–3 weeks. The City employee involved is on standard administrative leave.
