Keeping food safe during a power outage starts before winter storms arrive, according to Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee. She recommends keeping an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer to ensure temperatures remain safe—40 degrees Fahrenheit or below for the refrigerator and 0 F or below for the freezer.

Blakeslee also suggests stocking up on canned and non-perishable foods, including dried snacks like fruit, jerky, and crackers, as well as nutrient-dense items such as nut butter, trail mix, and ready-to-eat canned fruits, vegetables, or meats. Food for infants, the elderly, or those with special diets should also be included, along with tools like can openers, knives, and bottled water.

During a power outage, keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed preserves cold temperatures. Coolers with ice or dry ice can help protect food. Perishable items like meat, dairy, eggs, and cut produce should be discarded if unsafe, following FoodSafety.gov guidelines.
