Prepare Your Home: Kansas Braces for Another Round of Winter Weather

Kansas is bracing for another round of winter weather, making it a good time to take simple steps to protect your home from ice and snow damage. Homeowners’ and renters’ insurance may cover common winter-related damages, so review your policy with your agent to ensure you’re adequately protected.

“It is important to take precautionary steps and winterize your property to protect against freezing temperatures,” said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “If you are a victim of winter weather damage, contact your insurance agent right away.”

The Kansas Department of Insurance recommends these precautions:

  • Protect pipes: Disconnect garden hoses, winterize irrigation systems, let faucets drip, and open under-sink cabinet doors for pipes near outer walls.
  • Check your furnace: Schedule an annual inspection and replace HVAC filters as directed.
  • Seal leaks: Insulate your home, check attic and plumbing vent seals, and ensure recessed lights are properly sealed.

If you need help with an insurance claim, contact the Kansas Department of Insurance’s Consumer Assistance Division at 785-296-3071.
