Priest Fatally Shot in Seneca, Kansas; Suspect Arrested and Charged with Murder

A Catholic priest was fatally shot outside his parish rectory in Seneca, Kansas, on Thursday in what authorities say was a targeted attack with no known motive.

Father Arul Carasala, 57, was found with gunshot wounds around 3 p.m. outside Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police later arrested 66-year-old Gary L. Hermesch. Prosecutors charged him Friday with first-degree murder, saying the shooting was intentional and premeditated, according to court records.

Authorities have not provided a motive, and Hermesch’s attorney, Jason Belveal, declined to comment.

Hermesch is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, about 300 miles south of Seneca, a small town of roughly 2,000 people near the Nebraska border.

The Kansas City Star reported that Hermesch turned himself in at the Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office, where his brother works as a dispatcher.
