Red Cross Urges Caution as Early Heat Wave Hits: Stay Cool, Hydrated, and Informed

With unseasonably high temperatures hitting the central U.S. this week, the American Red Cross Kansas and Oklahoma Region urges residents to take precautions: slow down, stay hydrated, and keep cool indoors. While highs will be in the 90s—not triple digits—the sudden heat poses serious risks, especially for young children, older adults, and those with health issues.

Heat-related illnesses can be deadly. Last year, about 2,300 people died from extreme heat. The Red Cross advises avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak hours, drinking plenty of water, and seeking air-conditioned spaces. Know the signs of heat illness: cramps, exhaustion, or heat stroke. Call 911 for heat stroke symptoms like high body temp, confusion, or unconsciousness. Check on vulnerable neighbors, never leave kids or pets in cars, and call 211 for local cooling centers. Staying aware and prepared can save lives.
