Red Cross Urges Kansans to Prepare as Dangerous Heat Wave Approaches This Weekend

Dangerously high temperatures are expected across Kansas starting tomorrow and lasting through the weekend. The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas is urging residents to take key precautions: stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even without feeling thirsty; stay cool by spending time in air-conditioned places such as malls, libraries, or cooling centers; and stay connected by checking on vulnerable people, including the elderly, those with health conditions, outdoor workers, and pets.

Heat illnesses can escalate quickly. Heat cramps involve heavy sweating and muscle pain—rest in a cool place and drink water slowly. Heat exhaustion causes weakness, nausea, and dizziness—loosen clothing, sip water, and seek help if symptoms persist. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—call 911 immediately.

Never leave children or pets in parked cars, and ensure animals have shade and fresh water. If a power outage occurs, use a cooler for food and medicine, and seek safe, cool shelter. For more tips, download the free Red Cross First Aid and Emergency apps.
