The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas is urging Kansans to prepare for a major winter storm expected to arrive Friday, bringing snow, ice, sleet, freezing rain, and extreme cold across a wide area. Residents are encouraged to stay warm indoors and use caution with space heaters, fireplaces, and generators to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. If homes become too cold, people should go to warming centers, libraries, or malls. When outside, dress in layers and watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia, such as numbness, confusion, or slurred speech. Avoid unnecessary travel, be careful on icy surfaces, and check on neighbors, especially older adults or those living alone.
The Red Cross also advises preparing for possible power outages by planning how to stay warm, access food and water, and communicate. Keep food cold, unplug electronics, and use flashlights instead of candles. Homeowners should take steps to prevent frozen pipes by keeping cabinets open, letting faucets drip, and maintaining consistent heat. In addition, the Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage due to winter weather canceling hundreds of blood drives. Eligible donors are encouraged to give blood where it is safe to do so.
