Congressman Derek Schmidt has introduced the bipartisan Pet Food Uniform Regulatory Reform (PURR) Act of 2025, co-sponsored by Congressmen Steve Womack and Josh Harder. The bill aims to establish consistent standards for pet food and labeling, enabling manufacturers to focus on creating high-quality, nutritionally beneficial products rather than navigating inefficient and inconsistent regulations.
The pet food industry plays a vital role in eastern Kansas’ economy, with the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor accounting for 61% of all pet food sales in the United States. Congressman Schmidt’s district hosts several pet food manufacturing and processing facilities, further underscoring the industry’s regional importance.
The PURR Act has garnered support from leading organizations, including the Pet Food Institute, Pet Food Association of Canada, Pet Industry Distributors Association, Pet Advocacy Network, American Pet Products Association, World Pet Association, and the Human Animal Bond Research Institute.
