Students and staff in a southern Kansas school district are starting winter break earlier than planned due to a sharp increase in illnesses.

Dexter USD 471 announced Monday that classes have ended for the remainder of the semester after a large number of students and staff reported being sick. District officials said the move was made to protect the health of the school community and limit further spread.

In a social media statement, the district said illness levels are unusually high and spreading quickly. Leaders added that continuing in-person classes could worsen the situation and increase transmission at school and in the community.

As a result, all end-of-semester events, including extracurricular activities, will be postponed, canceled, or rescheduled once conditions improve.

Officials also noted concerns about students spreading illness to family members during holiday gatherings, particularly older relatives. The district thanked families for their patience and support and said the top priority is keeping students, staff, and the community safe.
