Rolling Hills Zoo celebrated Dream Night for children with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or terminal conditions on September 20. The event was made possible through support from the Salina Regional Health Foundation’s CHIP grant and the McCune & Middlekauff Foundation.
Upon arrival, volunteers welcomed each VIP child and their families with a special keepsake bag filled with a plush animal, water bottle, animal-themed hat, and other surprises. Zoo mascots George the Giraffe and Rowdy the Rhino, along with Kansas Wesleyan University’s Casey the Coyote, greeted guests and posed for photos. A giant bubble maker and the Salina Selfie Station added even more fun to the evening.

Families enjoyed a meal before exploring the Wildlife Museum, Hideaway Hollow, the Earl Bane Gallery, and the zoo itself on tram rides. They also participated in crafts and got to experience close encounters with animal ambassadors.

Seventy-four children and their families attended this year’s Dream Night, with help from Independent Connection volunteers, the KWU Cheer Squad, and the zoo’s team. Children unable to attend received a Golden Ticket for free zoo admission, their keepsake bag, and a $20 gift card to enjoy their own visit.

Dream Night began in 1996 at the Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands and has since grown into a global tradition. Rolling Hills Zoo joined in 2007, continuing the mission to give children facing health challenges a night of fun, happiness, and connection with animals.
