Western Kansas is cattle country and the town of Greensburg is using the resources they have at hand to celebrate football championships and the holiday season all rolled into one.

On the grounds of the Big Well Museum, visitors will find several round bales decorated like a giant Christmas ornament, a snowman, a carousel, and a festive camper trailer participating in a contest put on by the museum and the Visit Greensburg, Kansas organization. Heather Bailey, director of both organizations, said the contest has been going on since 2019.
“It’s pretty low stakes as far as prizes, but we do try to give out prizes for the most voted first, second, and third places,” she said.
Once it was announced that Kiowa County High School in Greenburg would be hosting the six-man as well as the Division I and Division II eight-man state football championships, members of the Visit Greensburg, Kansas board invited the six qualifying schools to decorate a bale wishing their players and coaches good luck.
“If they would like to decorate one for their team in kind of a fun, creative way then we have those out,” Bailey said. “If the teams don’t want to decorate one, they still have a good luck message sent specifically for their team on display.”
The Christmas bale contest participants will be on display throughout the first week of January.
