The Royals made a mid-game move Saturday, acquiring veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk from the D-backs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Andrew Hoffmann.
Grichuk, 33, has a career .827 OPS against left-handed pitching and is hitting .243 with 11 homers this season. With Mark Canha and Nick Loftin on the injured list, the Royals lacked a right-handed outfield option outside of utility player Tyler Tolbert.
Hoffmann, 25, debuted in the Majors this year but was recently optioned to Triple-A Omaha.
The Royals split Saturday’s doubleheader, winning Game 1 on Jonathan India’s walk-off homer before falling in Game 2, where starter Kris Bubic exited early with shoulder stiffness.
At 51-54, Kansas City remains 4.5 games out of the AL Wild Card with five days left before the Trade Deadline.
