The Royals added three pitchers at the Trade Deadline, acquiring Ryan Bergert, Stephen Kolek, and Bailey Falter in separate deals Thursday.
Kansas City traded catcher Freddy Fermin to the Padres for right-handers Bergert and Kolek. Later, they sent Minor Leaguers Evan Sisk and Callan Moss to Pittsburgh for lefty starter Falter.
The moves address the team’s current rotation injuries and build depth for 2026. Falter has a 3.73 ERA in 22 starts this season. Bergert, 25, debuted this year and has a 2.78 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. Kolek, 28, has starting experience and club control through 2030.
Fermin, a longtime backup to Salvador Perez, was praised by the front office for his leadership and value.
With top prospects Blake Mitchell and Carter Jensen rising, the Royals have depth behind the plate. The team sits 53-54, three games out of a Wild Card spot.
