The Eisenhower Presidential Library is hosting a director’s screening of the new Kansas City PBS documentary titled “Running Towards the Fire: A War Correspondent’s Story” on Saturday, June 14 at 2 p.m. The program will be in the Visitors Center Auditorium and features Director/Writer Bernard McCoy.

Running Towards the Fire” captures the pivotal roles war correspondents played during the Allied forces’ 1944 D-Day invasion of Europe, offering a unique perspective on the conflict in France and beyond. It centers on the unpublished WWII memoir of Robert Reuben, who, at just 25 years old, was the first Allied correspondent in Normandy—parachuting in five hours before the D-Day landings. He went on to chronicle the Allied advance through to Germany’s surrender.

McCoy’s work has been recognized with six Emmy Awards, multiple “Best of Show” honors from the Broadcast Education Association, and national awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association. His previous documentaries include “Black Jack Pershing: Love and War,” “Seven Years a Correspondent,” and “They Could Really Play the Game: Reloaded.” McCoy holds degrees from the University of Kansas and Michigan State University. He continues to produce award-winning journalism while teaching news literacy, multimedia reporting, and documentary production at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
