Safe Kids Kansas and Topeka Zoo Host Safe Kids Day to Kick off Safe Kids Month

Governor Laura Kelly has proclaimed May as Safe Kids Month in Kansas, a time to raise awareness about childhood injury prevention. Each year, one in four children in the U.S. requires medical attention for preventable injuries. Safe Kids Kansas is working to reduce these incidents through education, programs, and policy initiatives.

Safe Kids Kansas and the Topeka Zoo are teaming up to host Safe Kids Day at the Zoo on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, held annually, aims to teach children and their families how to stay safe and healthy throughout the year. This year’s theme, “Explore the Great Outdoors,” focuses on enjoying nature safely.

Safe Kids Day at the Zoo offers a full day of fun, including games, interactive activities, and valuable safety resources for parents. Regular zoo admission applies, and families can explore the zoo while learning important safety tips.

Over 25 partners will host booths, and entertainment will be provided by Happy Faces Entertainment, Kansas Ballet Academy, and the Topeka Cello Collective. A temporary tattoo booth will also be available. Free bicycle helmets will be distributed and fitted by trained volunteers from 9 a.m. to noon, while supplies last. A special check presentation from State Farm will support bicycle safety and motor vehicle occupant protection, continuing their long-standing support of Safe Kids Kansas.
