Salina Regional Health Center has recently expanded its robotic surgical capabilities with the addition of the da Vinci SP system from Intuitive Surgical. This single-port system allows complex surgeries to be performed through a small incision, typically between 2.5 to 4 cm in length.
Building on the multi-port da Vinci systems in use since 2009, the single-port system provides surgeons with a magnified view of the surgical site while seated at a console, using hand and foot controls to guide the robotic instruments. The system features three wristed instruments and a 3D HD camera within a single cannula, connected to the robotic arm. It is mainly used for urologic surgeries, including procedures on the prostate, bladder, and kidneys.
The single-port system offers more precise, minimally invasive surgeries with smaller incisions, resulting in less pain, fewer side effects, and quicker recovery. Many patients require little to no narcotic pain relief, often managing with just Tylenol or ibuprofen. The direct approach of this technology can also reduce surgical time compared to traditional multi-port robotic surgery.
