The Saline Animal Control Advisory and Appeals Board deadlocked last Wednesday on a motion that would have allowed the city animal shelter to adopt pit bulls to residents outside Salina city limits, according to Salina 311.
The proposal aimed to let the shelter place pit bulls with non-Salina residents while keeping the existing breed restrictions within city limits. Although the motion was seconded, the vote ended in a 4-4 tie, causing it to fail.
Shelter representatives said they currently house 21 pit bulls, accounting for roughly one-third to one-half of their 57 available dog kennels. Staff are actively working to transfer the animals to other facilities, reporting that 10 dogs have been successfully relocated since the last board meeting. Efforts are ongoing to find additional placements in shelters across Colorado, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.
