The Sedgwick County Zoo announced on December 19 that Mwana, the first chimpanzee born at the Zoo, has passed away at age 41. Born on October 28, 1984, he was euthanized after a decline in health due to age-related issues.
The zoo remembered Mwana as playful, affectionate, and curious, known for welcoming new family members and engaging with his caretakers. He enjoyed learning and interacting, leaving a lasting impact on both his keepers and visitors.
The zoo said on its Facebook page that “after a significant decline in his quality of life due to various age-related factors, Mwana’s care team made the incredibly difficult yet compassionate decision to humanely euthanize Mwana.”
The zoo said he will be deeply missed.
