Today, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran joined Senators James Lankford, Chris Coons, and 10 colleagues in introducing the Charitable Act. This bill aims to expand and extend the expired non-itemized deduction for charitable giving, allowing Americans who donate to charities, religious organizations, and other nonprofits to deduct their contributions from federal taxes at a higher level than the current deduction.
The deduction was originally established by the CARES Act in 2020, signed into law by President Trump. It led to 90 million tax returns utilizing the deduction, with households earning between $30,000 and $100,000 seeing the greatest increase in charitable giving. As a result, charitable organizations received an additional $30 billion in donations.
“Americans continuously demonstrate their generosity and their desire to help those in need through their charitable giving,” said Sen. Moran. “Updating our tax laws will help reward and incentivize more charitable donations to provide resources for individuals who need help.”
