Shredded cheese sold at major retailers, including Target, Walmart, and Aldi, has been recalled in 31 states and Puerto Rico, according to the FDA. The cheese, made by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc., was first recalled on Oct. 3 after metal fragments were found in the product, creating a risk of internal injury. On Dec. 2, the FDA raised the recall to a Class II risk level, meaning serious health issues are unlikely, but temporary or reversible health effects are still possible.

The recalled cheese was sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

The FDA did not provide specific instructions for this recall. However, as a Class II recall, the safest option is to avoid eating the affected cheese and to toss or return it instead.
