Simple, Creative Summer Activities for Kids Start at Home

Parents looking to keep school-aged kids entertained this summer might find the perfect activities right in their kitchen cabinets—using everyday items like cornstarch, water, and food coloring.

Tristen Cope, a family and youth development agent with K-State Research and Extension’s Chisholm Trail District, recommends making homemade chalk paint by mixing equal parts cornstarch and water, adding a bit of food coloring, and pouring the mixture into muffin tins or small cups. The paint is perfect for outdoor play and washes off easily.

Cope points families to the “Suddenly in Charge” publication series from K-State Research and Extension, which includes 11 guides packed with easy, engaging activities for children and caregivers.

Ideas include:

  • Calm jars: Fill a jar with water, clear glue or corn syrup, and items like glitter or sequins. Seal and shake for a calming sensory break.
  • Backyard camping: Set up a tent, cook outdoors, tell stories, and enjoy nature—even if you sleep inside.
  • Masking tape freeways: Lay tape on floors and furniture to create “roads” for toys.
  • Indoor forts: Use furniture, blankets, and pillows to build cozy hideouts for play and reading.
  • Story time: Reading together creates bonding moments and supports child development, whether under a fort, a tree, or a cozy chair.

Cope also encourages involving kids in the kitchen—measuring ingredients teaches math, and making snacks like smoothies or frozen fruit can be both educational and refreshing.
