Six Cases of Measles Confirmed in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) confirmed six measles cases in southwestern Kansas, with the first reported last Thursday. The affected counties are Grant and Stevens, and all cases involve unvaccinated individuals. No hospitalizations have been reported. This is the state’s first measles outbreak since 2018.

Measles symptoms typically begin with a fever over 101°F, runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes. A rash usually appears within four days, starting on the face and spreading. Symptoms develop 7 to 21 days after exposure.

Local health officials are notifying those exposed. The CDC recommends the MMR vaccine for protection.
