The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has awarded 2025–2026 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Planning and Programming grants to six communities: Alta Vista, Douglass, Fort Scott, Grainfield, La Crosse, and Leavenworth.

These grants will help each community develop an SRTS plan starting in August, with final plans due by May 2026. Each plan will include an analysis of current conditions, input from public outreach, and recommendations for infrastructure and non-infrastructure improvements to help more students safely walk, bike, or roll to school.

Once their plans are complete, communities can apply for SRTS construction and implementation funding through KDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program.

This marks the third round of planning grants awarded by KDOT. The next application opportunity is scheduled for April 2026. More details are available at saferoutes.ksdot.gov.

KDOT also recently completed the 2024–2025 round of planning with five communities: Wallace County, Riverton, Sedan, Silver Lake, and Wellsville. Their SRTS plans and others are available at saferoutes.ksdot.gov.
