Girls are getting their own spotlight with “Sunday Night Lights,” Washburn University’s first-ever female flag football team camp. The event takes place Sunday, June 8, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is open to high school teams only.

The camp reflects the sport’s rapid growth, driven by its addition to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and support from organizations like the NFL. According to the release, participation among girls ages 6 to 17 has surged by 63% over the past five years, with more than 500,000 now playing flag football.

“Our staff quickly identified the trend of female flag football, wanting to help it grow and give these athletes the recognition they deserve for competing in the sport we love, football,” said Zach Watkins, head coach, Washburn University Football. “Male athletes have numerous football camp options, so we wanted to be among the first to provide an option for females.”

Ten teams are already signed up for the camp, with more expected to join. Athletes will compete at both Yager Stadium and the Indoor Athletic Facility at Washburn University. Several colleges and universities—including NCAA and NAIA programs—now offer women’s flag football, creating new opportunities for student-athletes.

“Sunday Night Lights” allows players to sharpen their skills and showcase their talent in front of college coaches who are actively recruiting for this growing sport.

“Besides exposure for these athletes, this camp is about building a sense of sisterhood, recognizing the hard work and dedication of young women in the sport and giving them a space to shine – something they’ve long deserved,” said Ross Sharp, assistant coach and director of player personnel, Washburn University Football.
