Survey Highlights 35 Years of KARL’s Impact on Rural Leadership in Kansas

A survey reflecting 35 years of experiences from graduates and supporters of the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL) program highlights its role in strengthening Kansas communities.

Officials from the nonprofit KARL program report an “overwhelming response” confirming the program’s success in developing leadership, expanding networks, increasing community involvement, and deepening knowledge of Kansas agriculture and rural issues.

Founded in 1990, KARL launched its first class in 1991 and has since graduated over 450 leaders. The 17th class was named in June 2024.

The study surveyed 154 graduates and supporters, along with 29 in-depth interviews, to explore the program’s impact. All 16 KARL classes were represented, with 77% of respondents living in rural areas and 81% being program graduates.

Findings highlight numerous graduates advancing to leadership roles, including state legislators, business owners, and agriculture association CEOs. Participants credited KARL’s seminars and industry connections for broadening perspectives.

Officials emphasize that KARL’s value lies not just in its curriculum but also in the quality of people involved. For more information, visit karlprogram.com or call 785-532-6300. Applications for Class XVIII open in January 2026.
