The Marion County Health Department has reported a suspected case of rabies in a feral cat found near Marion County Lake. The cat was spotted in a residential area on the evening of Wednesday, July 9, showing unusual behavior such as aggression, confusion, and stiff movements. Although the animal has been removed, it could not be tested for confirmation.
Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects mammals, including humans. It is spread through bites or scratches from an infected animal or when saliva or brain tissue from a rabid animal comes into contact with broken skin, eyes, nose, or mouth.
While the immediate threat has passed, health officials urge the public to remain cautious and follow these safety measures:
- Avoid contact with wild or stray animals
- Keep pets current on rabies vaccinations
- Report suspicious or aggressive animal behavior to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 620-382-2144 or call 911
