The Neighboring Movement, founded in 2015, has grown from a small nonprofit focused on improving the SoCe neighborhood in Wichita to a statewide organization that empowers communities to build themselves from the inside out. The movement’s key initiative, the Animator Network, trains individuals to strengthen their neighborhoods using an asset-based community development model. This model encourages recognizing and utilizing the skills of local residents to foster stronger, safer communities.
The organization saw significant growth in 2020, aided by pandemic-driven opportunities, and has expanded its reach, training over 100 animators across Kansas. In addition, in 2023, the group began acquiring property, purchasing abandoned buildings to create a self-sustaining commercial center, “SoCe Corner,” to revitalize the area.
With support from the Kansas Health Foundation and other partners, the organization continues to push for community empowerment and long-term positive change.
