President Donald Trump signed a funding bill Wednesday night that ended the record 43-day government shutdown. The shutdown had caused financial strain for federal workers, travel delays, and long food bank lines.

The funding deal passed the House 222–209 after the Senate approved it earlier in the week, according to a press release. The shutdown stemmed from a fight over extending enhanced health insurance tax credits under the Affordable Care Act. Democrats wanted the extension included in the bill; Republicans said it should be handled separately.

The final agreement funds three spending bills and keeps the rest of the government open through Jan. 30. It restores jobs for federal workers fired during the shutdown, protects them from layoffs through January, and ensures they get back pay. It also secures continued funding for food assistance programs and increases security funding for lawmakers and Supreme Court justices. The bill sparked debate over health care subsidies, with Democrats warning that millions could lose coverage if the tax credits expire. Republicans criticized the subsidies as unnecessary pandemic-era aid. Lawmakers are expected to revisit the health care issue in December.
